Focus of the Week: Invest in the confidence of others
Because our brains evolved to survive threats, we naturally hear and amplify the negative. People actually need to hear 3 times as many positive comments as negative comments to get it. If you want to be a great mentor, team member, or just a positive contributor to society, we need you to invest in the confidence of others by being an encouragement.

Focus of the Week: Call others to greatness
The best mentors challenge others. They cause us to bring our A game. They invite us to be greater than we thought we could. Because here’s the deal: You’re passionate. You are gifted. You have a vision to shape the future. But we can’t do that alone. We must call others to greatness. We all need a guide who calls us to action and calls us out when we’re not bringing our best.

Focus of the Week: Learn as much as you share in the mentoring relationship
To grow as a mentor, we have to be willing to learn as much as we teach. I believe that the secret sauce to mentoring is learning from the person that you’re mentoring; the more you learn from them, the more impact you will have.

Focus of the Week: Build Trust to Grow Relationships
Mentoring is a partnership, and while one person has more experience to share, we grow the opportunity and possibility to invest ourselves as a mentor when we build trust first. I believe we should all, always be on the lookout for people looking to take the next right steps, improve their skills, grow in their abilities, and keep working toward a better team, organization, or whatever future and world they find themselves in. This week, we start the shift from teaching to mentoring.

Focus of the Week: Support the areas that others want to grow
People will invest the most time, energy and effort in the areas that they are most interested. Don’t fight it – invest in it! Not everyone wants to learn what you think they need to learn. Sometimes supervisors or classroom teachers can experience this the most, but as one of my mentors says: “The first rule of teaching is that people learn what they want to learn.” When individuals have a personal interest or a sense of autonomy in what they are learning, they are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and invested in the learning process.

Focus of the Week: Every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow
So this month we’ve been focused on teaching, first by starting with strengths and last week with a new process for practice. This week is a follow-up to practicing and our growth focus is: every moment is the opportunity to learn and grow. A growth mindset is the belief that one's abilities can be developed and strengthened through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to learning. I want you to strengthen your growth mindset for yourself and others. This happens formally through teaching and practice opportunities, and informally through watercooler conversations, impromptu meetings and conversations.

Focus of the Week: Try a new process for practice.
We all learn and grow the best through practice. When it comes to teaching others, whether you’re in front of a classroom, auditorium, 1 on 1 or with a group: growth begins when THEY start to do it. This can be very hard for me because it’s easier to just show others or do it for them. And there’s a place for modeling and showing how something might be done. But if you want others to grow, you have to let them practice and do it. I offer a 4 step process and then give a few examples.

Focus of the Week: Identify, practice and share our strengths
The best way to achieve your goals, hopes and dreams is by teaching, mentoring and coaching others. The goal of teaching isn’t just to fill brains with knowledge; the goal is for those you are teaching to be able to use what they have learned. But I want you to start by identifying and investing in strengths. Invest in your strength and help others invest in their strengths. To find your niche, for the greatest growth, to be happier, and to have the greatest impact: focus on strengths, not weaknesses.
